India's semiconductor industry is projected to face a shortage of 250,000 to 300,000 professionals across R&D, manufacturing, design, and advanced packaging by 2027, according to a report by TeamLease Degree Apprenticeship. The Indian government aims to capture a significant share of the global semiconductor market and has approved four projects under a ₹76,000 crore incentive scheme.
Sumit Kumar, Chief Business Officer at TeamLease, noted that electronics industry apprenticeships have increased from 7,517 in 2019-20 to 91,948 in 2023-24, highlighting the importance of government support through the PLI and DLI schemes. CEO Ramesh Alluri Reddy emphasized the goal of boosting employment in India, especially with a $15 billion investment in three semiconductor plants.

The PLI scheme offers a $1.7 billion incentive for establishing semiconductor facilities, with advancements in AI-driven technologies driving demand for professionals skilled in AI, IoT, and 5G. Building a strong ecosystem and skilled workforce through apprenticeships and training programs is crucial for India's growth in this sector.
Projections suggest India's semiconductor industry will reach $100 billion by 2030. The government and industry have collaborated to develop specialized semiconductor curricula for over 300 leading Indian colleges, enhancing the talent pipeline.
