Course Layout

  1. Week 1: Course philosophy and introduction to R.

  2. Week 2: Linear algebra for data science (algebraic and geometric perspectives).

  3. Week 3: Statistics (descriptive statistics, probability, and hypothesis testing).

  4. Week 4: Optimization techniques.

  5. Week 5: Data science problem typology and solution frameworks.

  6. Week 6: Linear regression and model assessment.

  7. Week 7: Classification using logistic regression.

  8. Week 8: Classification using k-NN and k-means clustering.

Certification Details

The course is free to enroll and learn. Certification is optional and involves a proctored exam.

Exam Details

  • Date: March 22, 2025.

    • Morning Session: 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM.

    • Afternoon Session: 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM.

  • Fee: INR 1000/- per exam.

  • Registration: Opens soon; announcements will follow.

  • Eligibility:

    • Average assignment score ≥ 10/25.

    • Exam score ≥ 30/75.

    • Final score ≥ 40/100.

Certification Criteria

  • Assignment Weightage: 25% (Best 6 out of 8 assignments).

  • Exam Weightage: 75%.

  • The certificate will feature your name, photograph, score breakdown, and logos of NPTEL and IIT Madras.

  • Only e-certificates will be issued; hard copies are not available.


Instructor Profiles

Prof. Ragunathan Rengasamy

Prof. Rengasamy is a professor at IIT Madras and a former faculty member at Texas Tech University and IIT Bombay. His expertise includes fault detection, diagnosis, and developing data science algorithms for manufacturing industries.

Prof. Shankar Narasimhan

A professor in the Chemical Engineering Department at IIT Madras, Prof. Narasimhan specializes in data mining, process optimization, and fault diagnosis. He is also the co-author of a critically acclaimed book on data reconciliation and error detection.
